If the computer is shutting down, here is what you need to do

There's a pretty interesting Windows exploit that's hitting today (August 11, 2003).  It's mostly affecting XP but some 2000 installs can have problems, too.  The patch for it came out on the 21st of July.

If you didn't get the patch applied and your computer keeps shutting down, here's what you can do:
  1. Control Panel
  2. Administrative Tools
  3. Services
  4. Under Services find the Remote Procedure Call and right click it.
  5. Choose Properties
  6. Choose Recovery Tab You'll see the "At first failure...", "At Second Failure..." options.  Change those to "Take No Action" or "Restart The Service" instead of "Reboot the Computer".

Now, you should be able to apply the patch.
